A fantastic opportunity for the community to come together by bringing to life the countryside tradition of hedglaying. This dynamic event will be led by an expert hedgelayer and supported by staff from CPRE Hampshire (Campaign for the Protection of Rural England) and Eastleigh Borough Council's Ranger Team.

There is the chance to book on to a fully instructed hedge laying course with a professional hedge layer (£20 to book), or for those with previous experience you are invited to put your hedge laying skills into action on a friendly hedge (Free of charge)!

Participants will learn how to use an axe and billhook, stakes and binders to lay and weave a traditional hedgerow. Hedge laying is an ancient craft, yet essential to modern day hedgerow management.

We have lost half of all our hedgerows in the last 70 years, over 500,000 km of hedgerow. Now of the half of them we have left, half of them are in unfavourable condition due to lack of or poor management.

As a community we will come together on the 21st January to bring a hedgerow back to good health and leave you with a good insight into hedgerow laying and management.

Teas, coffees and cake will be provided on the day! Please bring your own packed lunch.

The Hampshire Hedge Project

This event is part of the wider Hampshire Hedge project, connecting up the New Forest and the South Downs National Parks with green corridor of hedgerows and wild spaces. Over a 3-year period (starting Autumn 2023) CPRE Hampshire will restore a network of 12 – 14 miles of hedgerows working with local communities, schools, landowners and farmers to manage existing hedgerows and plant new ones, connecting copses and meadows along the way.
