TOTAL DISTANCE: 8.1km

ASCENT: 261m

Rivington Pike is one of Lancashire’s most recognisable landmarks and this two-hour sunrise hike explores the woodlands and terraced gardens beneath the pike before climbing to the summit ridge in time to watch the sunrise.

We’ve teamed up with outdoor networking community Freshwalks to design the route and lead the walk on the day. Our route leaves Rivington Brewery Tap before dawn and crosses the causeway into the country park, climbing steadily through the woods to reach the Pigeon Tower. From here, we walk along the edge of Rivington Moor before a final short, steep ascent to the Tower.

After watching the sun rise and admiring the views across Lancashire out to the Fylde coast, it’s an easy descent through the woods and back to Rivington Brewery for a brew and some well-earned breakfast butties.

IS IT FOR ME?

This walk is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and is fully guided and marshalled, so you don’t need to worry about navigation. The going underfoot will be uneven at times, with some steep climbs and descents. We’d recommend that all participants wear walking boots or shoes with good grip. Bring some water to drink, waterproofs, hats and gloves and maybe an extra layer. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a short lead at all times.

CONTEXTS

Gifted to the people of Bolton by Lord Leverhulme, Lever Park has been a Country Park since 1904. The park is a mixture of open ground, woodland and avenues, with a replica of Liverpool Castle located near the lower reservoir. Built in 1733, the Pike Tower is a prominent Lancashire landmark which was originally used as a hunting lodge. Further along the summit ridge, there are spectacular views westward toward the coast from the Pigeon Tower. The intimate woodlands and terraced gardens below the pike were once the private gardens of Lord Leverhulme’s imposing lakeside residence.
