The Army Benevolent Fund is the National Charity of the British Army. We stand at the forefront of support for the Army family. In FY 2023/2024, our total charitable expenditure was over £9 million, ensuring a complete spectrum of support to around 75,000 members of the Army family. We have supported the British Army family all over the world – in 51 countries. • Our support is truly ‘for life’ with individuals supported aged from 1 day old to 104 years old. We funded 86 other charities and organisations that are providing specialist support to the Army family.

About the Charity:

In February 1944, Winston Churchill’s War Cabinet discussed the formation of the Army Benevolent Fund – a National Charity for the British Army – to ensure support would be available for soldiers, veterans and their families.

Since our formation in 1944 as the Army’s National Charity, our promise and purpose has remained unchanged: to ensure every soldier, past, present and future, can avoid hardship and live with independence and dignity.

From helping wounded soldiers to adapt to life after service, to assisting elderly veterans to keep their independence, we’re here for the Army family when they need us. We offer support in six key areas: independent living, elderly care, education and employability, mental fitness, families and housing. In FY 2023/2024, our total charitable expenditure was over £9 million, ensuring a complete spectrum of support to around 75,000 members of the Army family.
