Swap beds for sleeping bags and brave the winter weather, so that people experiencing homeless can wake up to a brighter future.

We will all be connected by one aim – to raise funds that will help provide safe shelter and support for vulnerable people who are forced to sleep outside every night.

Doing the Sleep Out isn’t about replicating rough sleeping. Of course, spending one cold night in May's Bounty couldn’t possibly come close to the stark reality of being homeless and sleeping on the streets. However, by taking on our eye-opening challenge, you will be raising vital funds to help rebuild and save lives.

Whether you choose to join us in May's Bounty for the night, choose to ‘camp out’ in your garden with friends or family, or even sleep in your office with your colleagues...you can make a big difference!

In 2023, over 100 people signed up to take on the challenge - including the Mayor and Mayoress - and the Big Basingstoke Sleep Out won 'Best Community Event' at the Destination Basingstoke 'Place To Be Proud Of' Awards.

We do not accept sign ups on the evening of the event, registration closes 12pm on Friday the 15th March 2024.

What will I need on the night?

⭐ A sleeping bag. ⭐ Cardboard and/or plastic sheeting to be placed between you and the ground. ⭐ Plenty of warm clothes, hats, gloves, and waterproofs. ⭐ Snacks and drinks. ⭐ A torch (one with a red filter is best, you can buy these or make your own with some red film).

I can't get to May's Bounty. Can I take part at home / somewhere else?

Yes! We appreciate that not everyone is able to join us, as much as we'd like you to. You are welcome to take part in a place that suits you, as long as you have any necessary permissions. If you do choose to take part at home, please email [email protected]

What happens if the weather is bad?

The Sleep Out is a challenge that will give you a very small insight into what it might be like to sleep rough every night, including cold temperatures and wet weather. We will have some emergency shelter that can be used if needed.

Will I receive any resources for the night, and to help me fundraise?

Absolutely. We will send you regular emails between now and the event to help organise your fundraising and how to sleep out on the night. If you’d like some fundraising tips now, head to our  Fundraising Tips & Ideas page on our website!
